What To Say If You Get Rejected?

Nobody likes version the bad news that they weren’t accepted for the job, but it happens to the best of us. So after you’ve had sometime to pull up your chin, consider writing a letter of thanks to the manager who rejected you. Before putting your fingers to the key-board, ask yourself these questions:

  • Did I get the feeling that I was close to getting the job?
  • Is there any chance I could still get the job if the chosen applicant doesn’t work out?
  • Are there other job opportunities at the company I’d like to be considered for?
  • Might the manager have hiring contacts within or outside his organization that he could share with me?

Armed with answers to these questions, you’re ready to write a thoughtful thank-you note that could keep your job application alive.

Job-Hunt Hint

Your thank-you letter should be brief, no more than one page, and centered on the page, with lots of white space incorporated into its layout so that it’s easy to read.

Bonus Check

Even if your thank-you note after a job rejection doesn’t turn into another opportunity, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you handled a difficult situation with dignity. That’s the mark of a true professional.
